Big Fish and Big Water

Provo River Rainbow Trout, June 2010

So runoff is here and it’s here in a big way. Due to the late snow that we got in Northern and Central Utah, many of our rivers are huge and some have flooded. However, luckily the flooding seems to be subsiding now. The lakes are still fishing great and even the Provo River, especially the Lower Provo, has been fishing very well. My brother, Jeff, and I recently fished the Lower Provo with great success including the nice rainbow trout Jeff is holding in this picture.

Lake Fly Fishing

Lake fishing continues to be hot. The big reservoirs are starting to see big hatches of midges and fish are still feeding in the shallows. Our exclusive waters are experiencing a mixed bag. The private rivers we fish are overflowing banks in some places but the private lakes are fishing great with some of the biggest fish we’ve seen this year coming in the last few weeks.

June Fly Fishing Outlook

Warm weather is here to stay for the rest of the Summer and runoff looks like it will last until about a week before the end of the month on many of our rivers. Some small streams may stay fishable throughout the month. The stoneflies are starting to show now and Green Drakes and PMDs are not far off. The next several weeks, as soon as runoff subsides anyway, is absolutely prime time for catching big trout on big flies like stoneflies and Green Drakes.

This is the time of year we all wait for here in Utah so book a fly fishing trip now for the last week of June and first week of July to take advantage of some of the very finest fly fishing available anywhere.
