Fly Fishing the Rodent Hatch

Every so often, actually more often than not, fly fishing offers you up as a witness to some amazing things. One of these things happened this week as I watched Bryan hook into a pig of a cutthroat trout on a big mouse fly.

Bryan and His Gluttonous Cuttie

Mousin’ for Big Trout!

Bryan and I crossed paths this week and decided to get together for an hour or two of quick evening fly fishing. He was on his way to guide an Eastern Utah fly fishing trip the next day and I was just returning from guiding one. We would have a couple of hours of light if we met in the middle so we decided to chase some big cutthroats with mouse patterns on a big Utah mountain lake. Well, I got there first and in my frantic preparation to beat the fading light I discovered that I didn’t have any of my mouse flies with me. Dang it! I hurried down to the water and caught a few little guys with leeches and streamer patterns before Bryan arrived, but the real fun started when Bryan got there.

Big Cuts Eat Meat!

Of course as my luck would have it, Bryan only had one mouse pattern, a big black one, so I was out of luck. I was a bit bummed until I witnessed this big old cutthroat gulp Bryan’s fly, coming up from straight below to ambush it. It is just plain awesome to even watch it happen. Bryan got one other big fish to explode on the mouse but the fish jumped over it and missed. Short story – we’ll be back soon.

Book a trip with Utah Fly Guides and we’ll show you this cool way to catch big fish skating big mouse flies.
