12 May Mid May Utah Fly Fishing Report
Runoff is Here – Lake Fishing is Hot
It’s Runoff Time – Rivers like the Lower Provo, Upper Provo, and several others are beginning to rise. Most of the others are not far behind. The fishing on these rivers can, however, be decent for those willing to change up tactics during high water. I’ve found that this time of year can actually be one of the better times to target big fish as they are pushed from hiding by high flows and they begin to really feed heavily on all of the drifting forage items. One way to do a great trip is to combine a half day on the rivers and a half day on lakes. You will hit the rivers knowing that numbers of fish caught might not be high but that you may catch something huge and knowing that the lake fishing you do for the rest of the day will be great.
Speaking of great lake fishing, the six weeks or so in May and early June are among the very best weeks of the entire year to fish lakes in Utah. Utah Fly Guides can take you to the very best fly fishing lakes that Utah has to offer and UFG also has access to several private lakes that are producing some huge rainbows right now. Don’t put the fly rod away just because runoff is here. Get out on the water and catch the really big fish that are available now and that will get much more difficult to catch as Summer heats up.
